Leo Messi chose not to attend The Best Fifa Awards in London on Monday night.

The Argentine forward beat Mohamed Salah to a place in the FIFPro World XI but didn't make the three-man shortlist for the Best Fifa Men's Player award.

Salah, Cristiano Ronaldo and Luka Modric were nominated instead.

And, after a string of incredible World Cup performances, Modric became the man to end the 10-year reign of Ronaldo and Messi at the FIFA awards.

"It is a great honour and a beautiful feeling to stand here with this amazing trophy," said the Real Madrid midfielder.

"This award shows that we can all become the best with hard work and dedication. All your dreams can come true."

Meanwhile, PSG full-back Dani Alves was a shock inclusion in the FIFPro World XI.

The 35-year-old Brazilian spent most of his career playing alongside Messi and offered his opinion on Fifa's decision to overlook him.

"It's unjust that Messi was not nominated for The Best," said Alves, as per Sport.

"It's not just that they have only looked at what he has done with Argentina and not what he has done with Barcelona."

Dani Alves has a point.

Messi ended the 2017/18 season as the top goalscorer, assist provider, man with the most key passes and successful dribbles in La Liga.

Spain manager Luis Enrique believes Messi should've won the award.

“If I have to talk about Croatia, I would talk about Modric and [Ivan] Rakitic,” said Enrique. “Either of the two could receive any award.

“But if we’re talking about a prize for the best, I would give it to Messi.

"He is a step ahead of all the other players. If we’re talking about trophies, that’s something else. That’s my opinion.”
