Tiger Woods hadn't previously won a title since August 2013, so it goes without saying the emotions must have been high for the 42-year-old when he managed to claim his 80th PGA Tour title in Atlanta.

The American - who had spinal fusion surgery less than a year ago - came back from a five-year winning drought, to finish the 2018 Tour Championship, parring the final round to finish 11-under.

What's just as outstanding is the fact that Woods almost walked away with the FedExCup too, however, it was Britain's Justin Rose who secured the $10million (£7.6million) cash prize with an incredible birdie on the 18th.

Mcllroy full of admiration for his golfing idol

Woods went on to play his final round alongside Rory McIlroy, who was also eyeing up a victory before carding a disappointing 74.

The American eventually went on to win by two shots with victory all-but guaranteed by a trademark approach to the final hole. The American then walked up the last fairway alongside Mcllroy.

"What Rory was saying, you know, Rory was just – off the tee, he was great, and then coming down 18 – between our second and third shots, he said, ‘This is like Jack in ’80 at Baltusrol’," Woods said, per The Metro.

"I said, yeah, I just didn’t have the tight pants and the hair. But it was all good."

TOUR Championship - Final Round

Jack Nicklaus ended a two-year barren run by winning the 1980 US Open, and was similarly delighted to see Woods back at the pinnacle of the sport.

"My congratulations to @TigerWoods on winning the @playofffinale!" Nicklaus tweeted.

"I am very happy for him and extremely proud of him. Tiger has worked very hard to get to this place, and has played very well all season."

It's understandable that Woods was emotional as he closed out the victory after what has proved a superb comeback year, but was lost for words when it came to explaining his celebrations.

"Whatever happens in celebrations just kind of happens," he said.

"They’re not pre-planned, or at least in my regard they’re not pre-planned. Whatever the moment is the moment is."
