The FIFPro World XI, announced annually, always makes for interesting reading.

Designed to include the best eleven players in the world, it offers fans the chance to imagine just how devastating a single team could be.

The 2018 edition included a front four of Eden Hazard, Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

That would be simply unstoppable.

The XI was announced at FIFA’s ceremony in London on Monday and it featured some new names, including Hazard, David de Gea and N’Golo Kante.

FIFA enjoys celebrating the best players in the world but Spanish newspaper Marca have an alternate take on matters.

Whereas FIFA has ‘The Best’, Marca has ‘The Worst’.

The Worst XI

The team isn’t actually the worst eleven players in the world. Instead, Marca select high-profile players they believe haven’t performed up to expectations.

GK | Loris Karius | Liverpool/Benfica

Hardly a surprise following his horror-show in the Champions League final.

CB | Victor Lindelof | Manchester United

Lindelof struggled mightily in his debut season at Old Trafford. He was handed his Premier League debut as a substitute in the 93rd minute against Liverpool.

CB | Leonardo Bonucci | AC Milan/Juventus

The Italian defender caused a stir when he left Serie A champions Juventus for AC Milan but the move didn’t work out as planned.

Bonucci disappointed, AC Milan finished sixth in the table and the 31-year-old returned to Juventus in August.

CB | Benedikt Howedes | Schalke/Juventus/Lokomotiv Moscow

Juventus paid Schalke to sign Howedes on loan at the start of the 2017-18 season but they probably wish they hadn’t.

He made just three appearances before returning to Schalke, who sold him to Lokomotiv Moscow in the summer.

RM | Ganso | Sevilla/Amiens

The Brazilian was once considered to be a prospect but he flattered to deceive in his second season at Sevilla.

He made 11 appearances in all competitions and is now trying to relaunch his career in a season-long loan at Amiens.

CM | Tiemoue Bakayoko | Chelsea/AC Milan

Marca are spot on with this one.

His debut season at Chelsea was a disaster and it’s hardly a surprise that the Blues have loaned him out to AC Milan for the season.

CM | Wesley Sneijder | Al-Gharafa

Sneijder’s career is winding down in Qatar with Al-Gharafa.

But he started the 2017-18 season in France with Nice, a spell which would last just five months.

He was released from the Ligue 1 club after making eight appearances.

LM | Mesut Ozil | Arsenal

Ozil failed to reach his usual standards but it seems he’s been punished more for Arsenal’s failings.

The Gunners finished outside the top four and lost the Europa League final.

CAM | Alexis Sanchez | Manchester United

Man United fans probably thought they had got the better end of the deal when they swapped Henrikh Mkhitaryan for Sanchez in January.

But the Chilean’s struggles have continued into the 2018-19 season and the Red Devils have to be concerned about those £400,000-per-week wages.

ST | Luciano Vietto | Atletico Madrid/Valencia/Fulham

We’re still waiting to see the best of Vietto, whose fine performances for Villarreal earned him a move to Atletico Madrid in 2015.

Los Rojiblancos didn’t see any development from his during a loan spell at Valencia; they’ll hope for more during his temporary spell with Fulham.

ST | Kelechi Iheanacho | Leicester City

Three Premier League goals in 21 appearances is always going to make Iheanacho a target for a place in Marca’s XI.
