Kyrie Irving has been coy about his future with the Boston Celtics this summer which has inevitably led to speculation that he may explore his options in free agency next year. The point guard added to the rumours when he refused to sign an extension during the offseason. But he simply explained that it didn't make financial sense to do so as he could earn much more by re-signing in 2019. For those hoping to see Irving depart Boston - especially fans of the New York Knicks - they'll be disappointed to know that it's highly unlikely it'll happen. Speaking to various media outlets during the team's media day on Monday, the 26-year-old delivered the biggest indication that he has no interest in leaving. In an interview with ESPN's Rachel Nichols, Irving outlined several reasons why staying with the C's would be the best choice for him.

“Who wouldn’t want to be part of [the Celtics], honestly,” Irving said. “Because the future is very very bright in Boston.

"Even if I ever tried to think about that thought of going elsewhere, it’d be like ‘what are you thinking?

“We’re pretty effing good here. We’re pretty effing good for not just this year, but for years to come.”

The five-time All-Star is right in what he's saying as the Celtics are the favourites to win the Eastern Conference this season and are arguably the team best equipped to challenge the Golden State Warriors.

With such a talented young core, Boston is primed to become the next NBA powerhouse and eventually win a championship.

But when pressed by Nichols on if he was implying that his long-term future is with the Celts, Irving chose to deflect and not give too much away.

“It is what it is, honestly,” Irving said. “I think that I’m comfortable in the position I’m in.

"They know how I feel about them as teammates and the organisation in general. I’m happy to be a part of it. I can’t wait for it.”

Simply put, it appears that the former Cleveland Cavaliers guard is happy in Beantown and is willing to commit to the team but the terms have to be right.

A lot can happen between now and July 2019, so until he puts pen to paper, these questions will continue to arise throughout the season.
