Jose Mourinho is having a tough spell at Manchester United once again.

Mourinho’s position at the club looked under threat when they were defeated 3-0 by Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford, but they followed that poor result with three consecutive wins.

But, after the good run, Man United drew against Wolves on the weekend before being knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Derby County on Tuesday night.

Mourinho played a strong side against the Championship outfit but they were eventually defeated on penalties after the 90 minutes finished 2-2.

It was Phil Jones who was the man to strike the game losing penalty, with his team effort being easily saved by Scott Carson.

Mourinho caused a stir with his reaction to his miss after the game.

On Jones’ miss, he said, per the Metro: “I never blame a player missing a penalty because we know clearly, because we train and because we knew if it went in the direction of Jones and Eric Bailly, we would be in trouble then.”

Many accused Mourinho of throwing Jones under the bus and they have a point.

The Portuguese manager’s comments did seem unnecessary and would hardly have filled Jones with confidence going forward.

And the Telegraph have now revealed how United’s players reacted following his comments about Jones.

The report notes how his comments ‘did not go down well with players’ and many felt they were ‘ironic’.

“Mourinho’s claim that he knew United would be “in trouble” the moment Phil Jones stepped up to take a penalty that the defender ended up missing did not go down well with players and was cited as another example of the Portuguese’s willingness to publicly throw players under a bus,” the report reads.

“Sources close to two players said it was ironic Mourinho says he wants players to show more fight when at times he shows little appetite to fight for them in public and few can understand what the manager feels he has to gain by deriding individuals in such a way.”

Not good at all. Mourinho is already having a very publicised feud with Pogba at the moment.

In addition to that rift, it seems other United players are also not too impressed with Mourinho in recent times.

The Portuguese manager will have to be careful in the future or he risks losing the confidence of many in the United dressing room.
