Charlie Adam didn't exactly give Xherdan Shaqiri a glowing report when he left Stoke City this summer.

Now plying his trade with Liverpool, the Swiss midfielder came in for plenty of criticism after Stoke's relegation with everyone from Adam to the Neville brothers dishing out the objections.

However, it was Adam's verdict that caught the most traction because, after all, the Scot did share a dressing room with Shaqiri for no less than three seasons.

Speaking back in July, Adam explained: "He's a big player, at times he did well for us.

"But in critical situations, I felt tracking back and what we needed for the team in a relegation battle just wasn't there.

Adam criticised Shaqiri at Stoke

"He has got it in him, but he probably knew we were going to get relegated, he was going to the World Cup and had this big move - this move was probably done three, four months ago.

"He is a match-winner, but at times it was difficult to play in the same team. The manager would let him get away with certain things. We fell short, it's not just him, there are others.

"When you have players that knew they were going to get a move whether they were relegated or not, it was inevitable what was going to happen."

Shaqiri finally hits back at Adam

Certainly a stinging criticism and although the quotes have received plenty of reaction, the man himself remained quiet. Until now.

During an interview with the Evening Standard, the Liverpool man finally addressed the comments and he fought fire with fire.

"I think it’s just frustration maybe or jealousy because I had a good move," Shaqiri expounded.

“I was surprised that he spoke like this about me but that is sometimes the character of a player.

“I know what he said was totally wrong because at that time I played there - especially when times were hard - I was there and I was scoring a lot of goals.

“I was one of the only ones who helped the team with goals in difficult games and he was that guy who took the red card in [important] league games (against Everton) and missed a penalty (against Brighton).”

“I don’t have to prove Charlie Adam or some people that are speaking about me wrong."

So, it's fair to say Shaqiri wasn't best pleased with the comments.

He not only feels that Adam - an ex-Liverpool player himself - is jealous about his Anfield move, but that he should quiet down after the Everton red card and missed penalty vs Brighton.

It's easy to see both sides of the argument here and Adam isn't alone in raising questions about Shaqiri's attitude, particularly during Stoke's relegation season.

Nevertheless, the 26-year-old has made a very promising start to life at Liverpool despite having to compete with Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino.

If he can continue his early season form, then his performances will silence Adam as much as his words.
