Former super middleweight world champion turned Sky Sports boxing analyst, Carl Froch, is perhaps the man best qualified to give an opinion on the upcoming World Boxing Super Series Final between fellow Britons George Groves and Callum Smith.

Having fought and sparred with both men his views on how the fight will go are certainly not to be ignored.

Groves, 30, will defend his WBA super middleweight crown against Smith, an unbeaten Liverpudlian who has shown impressive pedigree in fighting his way to the final of the Super Series event.

The final, staged tonight in the sweltering heat of Jeddah in Saudi Arabia will prove an acid test for both men who will also battle for the vacant title of Ring magazine's super middleweight kingpin.

Froch, now safely ensconced in the commentary booth, had two acrimonious scraps with Groves at the tail end of his career and although he emerged victorious both times, he got a first-hand look at the skills and power possessed by the current WBA champ.

The Cobra has also revealed that he has done extensive sparring with the towering 28-year-old Smith and was impressed by what he faced.

Speaking to Sky Sports in previewing the highly anticipated clash, Froch made it clear that while he is hoping Smith will emerge victorious, he expects the experience of his more battle-hardened opponent to eventually prevail.

"I would like to see Callum Smith win the World Boxing Super Series, but that does not mean I think he will," revealed Froch before outlining what he sees as the major difference between the two fighters.

"Smith is tall and picks his shots well, but there is one big difference between him and Groves: he has never boxed at this level before. It doesn't mean I don't think he will win a world title, I just think this one and with what is at stake, has come too soon for him."

"Yes, he is the fresher, faster and livelier of the two, but there is one thing Groves has got that you can't buy or get in the gym, and that is experience."

"I do think Groves is on the slide and he does look like he's lost that bit of power. But he has gained wisdom to replace it. He's a much smarter fighter than when I faced him and I think that gives him the edge."

"I can see this being a real 50-50 fight and either of them are able to come out on top on their day but, as I said, experience lies with Groves and that, for me, makes him the slight favourite."

With the likes of James DeGale laying in wait, the winner will not only be crowned the Super Series champion but will have springboard to get into some even more lucrative fights in 2019.
