Andy Robertson has been nothing short of a revelation since forcing his way into the Liverpool first team.

Jurgen Klopp’s decision to sign the Scot from Hull City certainly raised a few eyebrows at the time, with many fans feeling a little underwhelmed by the move.

The signing became even more bizarre when Robertson was simply nowhere to be found in Liverpool’s match-day squads in the opening months of last season.

It looked like Robertson was in for a mighty challenge to get any sort of meaningful game time in the first team, especially with Alberto Moreno putting in some solid performances as well.

The now Scottish captain made very rare appearances here and there but was never given a consistent run as Klopp gave him all the time he needed to adapt to his system.

Eventually, Robertson got his chance and took it with both hands.

Now, Robbo - as he is affectionately known - is an undisputed fan favourite and one of the first names on Klopp’s team sheet week in, week out.

However, speaking ahead of his side’s top of the table clash with Chelsea, Robertson revealed that he was nothing short of miserable during those opening months.

“It was hard at the time as I was not used to not playing and it was something very new to me. I didn’t deal with it as well as I could,” he said.

“I did struggle, and I was probably not the best to live within the house, but it is hard because you are putting on a brave face on the training ground thinking you need to work hard to get in the team, but when you come home and start thinking about it and getting annoyed and frustrated, it goes into your family life.”

It did seem like Klopp was being very harsh on Robertson when he first arrived, but looking back on it now you can see the method in the madness.

Robertson also revealed the moment when he finally felt like he belonged at Liverpool, highlighting their FA Cup victory over Everton and the thrilling league win over Manchester City.

“I felt like I played well against Everton and I felt the fans started to recognise me a little. Obviously the Man City game being the next game helped as well, as my confidence was sky high,” said Robertson.

“That was two really good performances, and from then I just took the confidence and I felt that I really belonged.”

Robertson will be hoping to put in another memorable performance as the Merseysiders look to continue their perfect start to the season against Chelsea on Saturday eve.
