Liverpool had a rejuvenated Daniel Sturridge to thank for securing a late point against Chelsea.

Jurgen Klopp's decision to keep the England international on board prompted a lot of discussion in the summer, on the back of an injury-hit loan spell in which he failed to score a league goal for West Brom.

This term, the 29-year-old has already contributed four goals in all competitions and his latest served as a reminder of the sheer quality he possesses when fully fit.

It was a bitter pill to swallow for Chelsea. There were more signs of Maurizio Sarri's good work, yet they were ultimately denied the three points by their former striker.

Sturridge spent four years at Stamford Bridge between 2009-2013. Many felt he wasn't utilised to the full, and this was before injuries began to take their toll.

However, it appeared that no-one in west London begrudged him his moment of glory, Eden Hazard, who had opened the scoring in the 25th minute, congratulating him in the tunnel.

He was also seen embracing Chelsea assistant Gianfranco Zola on the pitch after the final whistle.

Sturridge's talk with Zola

When asked what he had said to the Blues legend, Sturridge told BT Sport:

"[I told him I had been] watching his videos, that's how I'm learning, the goal from the other night [in the Carabao Cup], today.

"That's what I told him, great player, he's a legend, and I really have watched his videos."

That was a strike of which even the legendary Italian would have been proud. There are just some goals you simply can't do anything about.

Liverpool might have felt they deserved something from a game in which they had more possession, attempts, and shots on target than their opponents.

What they lacked was a moment of inspiration, with Mo Salah not at his best, until Sturridge stepped up to the plate.

Despite suffering last-gasp disappointment, Chelsea can take solace in the fact that they remain unbeaten, though they have now drawn both their last two in the league.

It looked as though Liverpool were about to endure back-to-back losses at the hands of the 2016/2017 champions, but Klopp will surely be happy with a point as they head into an even bigger task against Manchester City next weekend.
