It looked as though it simply wasn’t going to be Liverpool’s day at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening.

Chelsea picked them apart brilliantly in the first-half, resulting in Eden Hazard opening the scoring - just days after his sensational winner against Jurgen Klopp’s side in the Carabao Cup.

But the Reds had plenty of chances of equalise.

Mohamed Salah rounded Kepa in the opening 45 minutes, only for Antonio Rudiger to make a brilliant clearance off the line.

In the second-half, Salah’s replacement, Xherdan Shaqiri, couldn’t convert from a low Andy Robertson cross.

With time running out, Roberto Firmino then saw his header blocked on the line by David Luiz.

Then, Daniel Sturridge produced a moment of magic.

Sturridge had only been on the pitch for three minutes when he collected the ball from Shaqiri and curled a magnificent effort into the top corner from 25 yards.

The travelling away fans went mental, the Liverpool players went mental but Sturridge stood there motionless.

Of course, Sturridge used to play for Chelsea so his muted celebration was clearly a sign of respect.

But just a few days ago at Anfield in the Carabao Cup, Sturridge was celebrating wildly after putting his side 1-0 with an acrobatic finish.

So why did he celebrate in the Carabao Cup and not the league?

Well, he explained exactly why after the match.

"It felt great. My cousin gave me some stick the other day for celebrating against Chelsea because he’s a Chelsea fan. I think in the moment like the other night I got excited and celebrated,” Sturridge explained.

“Obviously I’ve played for this club and achieved stuff with them and got a lot of respect for the players, staff and everything, so I didn’t want to celebrate today.”

That’s fair enough.

Of course, everyone associated with Liverpool will question Sturridge’s decision not to celebrate such a brilliant goal that earned a crucial point.

But Chelsea played an important role in the striker’s career and he clearly didn’t think it was right for him to rub their faces in it.
