Third-season syndrome is alive and kicking for Jose Mourinho at Manchester United.United have already lost three and drawn one of their seven Premier League matches, leaving them nine points behind rivals Manchester City and Liverpool. And they’ve also crashed out of the Carabao Cup at the hands of Championship side Derby County.Mourinho hasn’t lasted more than three seasons at Porto, Chelsea (twice), Inter and Real Madrid and now it looks it’s a case of deja-vu at Old Trafford. In fact, the Daily Mail claim that United staff believe Mourinho “could be sacked by the end of this week.”To be fair, Mourinho probably couldn’t complain if he does get the chop. While he may have led the Red Devils to a League Cup, Europa League and Community Shield treble in his debut season, they were trophyless last time around. And this campaign, it doesn’t look as though they will challenge for honours with their rather uninspiring football. Not to mention all the problems in the dressing room with the likes of Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford.Who saw this coming?Well, one man who certainly didn’t expect such a fall from grace from Mourinho was Piers Morgan. On the same day United appointed the Portuguese, Morgan tweeted: “Mourinho will be brilliant at United. Anyone who thinks otherwise is a footballing neanderthal. Just wish he'd come to Arsenal.”

Who’s the “neanderthal” now?

Despite the pressure on his job now, Mourinho insists that he continues to give 100% and will be totally focused on United’s Champions League tie against Valencia on Tuesday.

"I can assure Manchester United fans that I give 100% every day, every training [session], every 24 hours of the day, every match - that I can assure," he said after the 3-1 loss to West Ham on Saturday.

"And I can assure that I am a brave man with lots of experience and tomorrow morning I will be there and I will fight hard for the match on Tuesday. We go with everything we have for that match."
