The Legion of Boom era in Seattle is officially over.Well, it certainly looks that way after what transpired on Sunday in the Seahawks' marginal 20-17 victory over the struggling Arizona Cardinals in Glendale. With nine minutes left of the game at State Farm Stadium, Thomas went after a beautiful pass thrown by the Cardinals rookie quarterback Josh Rosen, but it went for a touchdown. While trying to break up the pass, Thomas' leg appeared to hit either Chad Williams or the ground, causing a clean, lower leg break.

That's heartbreaking for Thomas, but it isn't the end of the story. In fact, the likely season-ending injury is just another piece of a much bigger conversation that has culminated with Thomas being carted off the field in an air-cast, flashing the bird to his own bench.Yes, you read that correctly. While being taken to the medical center, Thomas - who has been arguing with the Seahawks for some time now - took what is likely his last chance to ever wear a Seahawks jersey to stick up his middle finger and show them exactly how he feels. You can take a look at the video here...

Some are asking, why has he made that gesture to his own sideline?

Well, here's the answer...

Thomas wants one thing and one thing only; security for the next few years of his career in the form of a nice new contract deserving of the best safety in the league.

That's what Thomas is, and there's no denying it. Through the first three games of the season, ET3 has proven himself to be the NFL's best free safety - literally saving them points and making sure they won games.

But the Seahawks don't want to give him that new contract. While they appreciate his play, they're more than happy keeping him on the modest $10m he's set to earn this year before becoming a free agent at the end of the season.

So, with no acceptable contract offer forthcoming, Thomas held out through training camp and the offseason, missing practices in an attempt to stay healthy and get traded to another team - one willing to pay him his worth.

But, unlike Le'Veon Bell, Thomas actually came back once the season started. And it has bitten him in the ***.

“That’s the crazy part of our business,” star linebacker and teammate Bobby Wagner said after the game.

“If he doesn’t come, then he’s not a team player. If he does come and gets hurt, it’s he shouldn’t have come.”

The Seahawks had willing trade partners, namely the Cowboys and Chiefs, but didn't get a deal done.

Now that Thomas is out for the rest of the year, that trade option is gone. As is another season of health, and a lot of money that will now be off the negotiating table. The market for 30-year-old safeties isn't high - especially one coming off a broken leg, even if you are the best.

And that's how we got here. To a team legend, one of the franchise greats, flipping off his own brothers and coaches.

Earl Thomas didn't do what was best for him. He did what was best for the Seattle Seahawks even when they wouldn't. Now he's the one who has to pay.

Life is cruel like that. Make your money while you can, and don't ever be sorry for looking after numero uno.
