Last season’s Premier League top goalscorer, Mohamed Salah, hasn’t been able to kick start his campaign the way he would have wanted to.

Despite Liverpool starting the season undefeated, now sitting second after their recent 1-1 draw away to Chelsea, Salah was again questioned after he failed to make a major impact against his former side.

Last year’s PFA Player of the Year Award and the Golden Boot winner did have an opportunity to score at his old stomping ground, however, after he rounded goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga defender David Luiz was positioned to clear the Egyptians effort away from goal.

Salah’s frustrating afternoon concluded on the 66th minute mark as he was replaced by fellow forward Xherdan Shaqiri.

As substitute Daniel Sturridge produced an 89th minute wonder strike to level the game, Liverpool returned to Merseyside with a point, but Salah’s failure to score was a talking point post-match.

Despite Salah’s seemingly slow start to the new campaign the Egyptian has only scored one goal fewer than this time last season.

Jamie Carragher on Salah's form

As Salah sits on three goals in six league games, compared to his four of last season, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher said Monday Night Football the winger’s form is being unfairly critisied.

"He's not in great form, but I don't really think he's in bad form either," Carragher said.

"I think a little bit too much has probably been made of Salah's form. He is only one goal down on last season.

"I hope Klopp is saying this to him about the goals he scored last season: if he doesn't get over 40 goals, it doesn't mean he's had a bad season.

"Ian Rush was Liverpool's greatest ever goalscorer and he only got 47 in one season. He never got 47 again, he would score 25 or 30 goals a season.

"If Salah gets 25 goals a season then he's had a great season."

Anfield legend Carragher admitted Liverpool’s talisman is lacking in confidence, but praised his willingness to get into scoring positions, in spite of this dip in form.

Carragher said: "He's scored three goals which is not a million miles away from what it was last season and it's not a bad start.

"The Expected Goals shows you he is still getting a lot of chances. We know from last season that he misses chances. Even though he scored a lot of goals, he misses big chances.

"That lad will always score goals because he still makes the runs in the right positions.

"I've got no problem with how many goals he's scored or what he's like around the box. He is doing okay."
