Jose Mourinho was looking for a reaction from his Manchester United players against Newcastle United on Saturday evening.Following four matches without a win, including defeats in the Premier League to West Ham United and in the Carabao Cup to Derby County, things are getting desperate at Old Trafford.A meeting against Newcastle United, in the relegation zone at kick-off, presented an opportunity to turn things around. But the Red Devils made a truly awful start to proceedings.Kennedy capitalised on some absent defending to give the Magpies the lead in the seventh minute and it was 2-0 just minutes later.Yoshinori Muto managed to turn inside the area before firing an effort beyond David de Gea.Much of the focus in the build up to the match centred on Mourinho’s job - and he’s certainly facing an uphill task to turn things around.

The players' reaction

After falling 2-0 behind, it was crucial for Man United players to show some fight.

But journalist James Robson spotted the immediate reaction of the players - and it wasn’t good.

“Looking at the reaction of the #mufc players to that second goal - there’s no way they’re coming back from this,” Robson wrote on Twitter.

“Heads down, shoulders slumped. Zero fight.”

Wow.

It’s felt in recent weeks that Mourinho has started to lose the dressing room and Robson’s tweet only emphasises that idea.

The Portuguese coach simply hasn’t been able to inspire his players and it’s resulted in a string of disappointing results.

Fans didn’t think that things could get much worse following the 3-1 defeat to West Ham at the London Stadium.

Mourinho’s team was outclassed by the Hammers and didn’t deserve anything from the match.

Then came an uninspiring effort against Valencia in the Champions League, in which the Red Devils failed to score.

Falling two goals down after 10 minutes to Newcastle United? Man United may have just reached their nadir.
