Manchester United came from 2-0 down to defeat Newcastle United 3-2 in a thrilling evening at Old Trafford.

The result, which came courtesy of Alexis Sanchez’s winner in the 90th minute, may just have kept Jose Mourinho in a job.

Reports emerged on Friday that the Red Devils were planning to sack Mourinho, regardless of the outcome of the Newcastle match.

But it will be hard for that to happen following the manner of United’s victory.

They looked lost 10 minutes into the match, falling behind through Kenedy and Yoshinori Muto’s goals.

But Mourinho made some changes and we saw a different Man United in the second half.

Juan Mata pulled a goal back in the 70th minute and Anthony Martial levelled the scores six minutes later.

Scholes didn't like Mourinho's comments

Then, just as the match was about to enter injury time, Sanchez popped up to send Old Trafford into hysteria.

There are still a large number of Man United fans who support Mourinho but the 55-year-old managed to cause a stir with his comments at full-time.

Mourinho described Marcus Rashford and Scott McTominay, both of whom were brought off, as being “sad” and “scared” during the match.

“Rashford was sad on the pitch. McTominay was scared on the pitch. All the players commit mistakes that were not normal,” Mourinho said.

Both players were brought off while United trailed 2-0 and Mourinho’s comments didn’t sit well with Paul Scholes.

The former Man United midfielder admitted there was no need for Mourinho to make the quotes in public.

“I didn’t really like the comments about McTominay and Rashford. I don’t think that will help them,” Scholes, a pundit on BT Sport, said.

“Maybe that’s a thing he could have done not in front of everybody, and give them a bit of confidence and put an arm around them.

“But to come out and say it… if that was me, I wouldn’t like that, I wouldn’t like that type of comment, saying I was scared on the football pitch.

“But he’s got great experience and he looks like he’s ready to fight and get through it.”

Scholes has a point. After such a thrilling win, was there really any need to bring up Rashford and McTominay?
