Conor McGregor was beaten on his UFC return as Khabib Nurmagomedov delivered a career-best display – but the Russian was seemingly the instigator of a post-fight melee that soured his victory.

McGregor was making his comeback to mixed martial arts after a near two-year hiatus, but the former two-weight champion submitted to his rival’s rear-naked choke midway through the fourth round in Las Vegas.

During that hiatus away from the Octagon, Notorious challenged Floyd Mayweather to a boxing fight, which the Irishman fell short in, and also started his own whiskey brand.

However, his return to his home wasn't as fruitful as he would've liked, and he tapped out in the fourth round, which was only the beginning of the drama.

Nurmagomedov therefore retained his lightweight title, but then threw his gumshield, mounted the cage and looked to attack someone from McGregor’s team.

A prone McGregor, still sitting on the floor after his defeat, was apparently attacked by someone from Nurmagomedov’s camp as the bad blood that has been building up ahead of this fight came to a head.

The hatred between both camps has been very clear during the build up to the fight, with Khabib stating beforehand that he wouldn't shake McGregor's hand after the fight no matter what the outcome.

The ugly scenes really tarnished what was a great night of fighting, and a great main event, and it's something that Dana White is sick of.

After observing the madness, White had this to say: "Khabib jumped over the cage going after Conor's guy who was talking trash to him and all hell broke loose. I don't know what to say right now, I'm just sick over it.

"Three of Khabib's guys have been arrested and are on the way to jail now.

"I know if we put the belt on him (Khabib) in the octagon they'll be things thrown. I just said let's just try and get him out of here.

"Both men made it clear that the rivalry would not be over after the fight, but I definitely didn't see Khabib jumping over the fence after the fight.

"Daniel Cormier and Luke Rockhold were great in diffusing things.

"What happens here is three guys have been arrested, there's going to be charges against them for sure. Those three guys, are they even going to get a VISA to come back here? There's a lot of things that they haven't realised yet."

White was quick to talk to McGregor after the saga as well, and on that, he said: "I've just talked with him (Conor) he's upset about the fight, not about the fight after the fight."
