Mohamed Salah was undoubtedly the signing of the season last year.

The Liverpool winger arrived from AS Roma with a decent, if unremarkable reputation but a year later he was placed third in FIFA's The Best awards.

That was the result of a 44-goal season that saw Salah win the PFA Player of the Year after he broke the Premier League record for goals in one season.

The Egyptian now forms part of Europe's most devastating front three with Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane, which was the backbone of Liverpool's run to the Champions League final last year.

While that may have ended in disappointment - especially for an injured Salah - reaching the final was an incredible achievement for the team.

Salah's reported £34million fee looked like a bargain after just a few months as he scored for fun under Jurgen Klopp and the decision to move for a player who failed to make any waves at Chelsea a few years before was an inspired one.

And as it turns out, they weren't the only Premier League team who considered it.

According to The Times, Liverpool had ruled out the possibility of Chelsea resigning Salah, as well as Manchester City or Manchester United having any interest.

Tottenham Hotspur weren't considered likely to move for the required fee, leaving Arsenal as their only potential rivals.

Not only did they see them as rivals, however, but Liverpool reportedly considered him to be a 'natural Arsenal signing'.

The Gunners had scouted Salah, too, and the Reds were said to be 'amazed' when Arsenal's scouts thought he was too 'wasteful' to move for.

Liverpool to beat Manchester City 2-1 (10/1*)

Liverpool, on the other hand, thought he could score as many as 20 goals a season - something they thought was world class for a winger.

As it turned out, both were wrong - although one club is likely to be far happier about that fact.

Liverpool signed him and he scored over twice what they thought he was capable of, leaving Arsenal to regret their decision.
