The dust has started to finally settle following the highly dramatic night in Las Vegas which saw Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor go head-to-head at UFC 229. The bout was concluded in the fourth round following Khabib’s dominant wrestling performance.

However, the fight will not be remembered for the Khabib’s career-best performance against the biggest name in the sport. Instead, the events which happened following McGregor tapping out have caused the greatest debate.

Khabib, whose victory meant he retained his lightweight title, chucked his gumshield, hurdled the octagon cage and attacked Dillon Danis from McGregor’s camp.

While Khabib was occupied outside of the cage, McGregor was attacked by two of the Russian’s entourage inside of the cage.

Why Khabib and his team acted in this way is initially of great shock as this victory was the biggest of his career. However, his motives can potentially be explained through the following five theories which have arisen, per the Daily Express.

THEORY 1 – Dillon Danis ‘insulted’ Khabib

Joe Rogan is a respected UFC expert and has two suggestions over why the post-fight antics emerged.

Rogan’s first explanation is that Dillon Danis, McGregor’s training partner, was insulting him.

Rogan said: “I don’t think it’s calculated. I think he was in the moment and full of passion.
"The fact his friends jumped in the cage and punched McGregor in the face when Conor had no idea that was going to happen, he wasn't even involved in that.

"The whole thing is extremely unfortunate and a black eye on the sport.

"We couldn't hear what he said but Dillon absolutely was insulting Khabib and that's when he jumped over the fence and attacked him.

"I couldn't believe my eyes when it was happening. When he went over the top and into the crowd, I couldn't believe it."

THEORY 2 – Conor McGregor used illegal moves

Rogan’s second theory is that Khabib could have been infuriated by ‘The Notorious’ using illegal moves during the fight.

Rogan said on commentary: "Khabib was angry because Conor was grabbing Khabib's gloves. He was hooking against his gloves and he was doing it illegally.

"Khabib said it to Herb Dean, he said that Conor did it three times. That's what it was all about. That's why he was fired up."

THEORY 3 – Conor McGregor insulting Khabib’s manager

McGregor had called Ali Abdelaziz, Khabib’s manager, a ‘terrorist snitch’ during a heated build-up to the fight.

"Shut your mouth, Ali Abdelaziz," McGregor raged. "You terrorist snitch! I know a lot about you as well, you mad man. I know a lot about you as well! You keep your mouth shut kid!

“How's Noah? How's Noah? Yeah, shut your mouth! Never speak about me, ever in your life! Watch yourself around me, 'cause you'll be out of here quick."

These insulting comments would have irritated Khabib due to his close relationship with his manager.

THEORY 4 – Conor McGregor insulted Khabib’s religion and his family

Khabib apologised for his actions following the fight and accepting that they were unacceptable but he did want to point out that he is only human.

"First of all I want to say sorry to Nevada Athletic Commission and second to Vegas. I know this is not my best side. I'm a human being.”

The 30-year old was quick to point out that although he jumped the cage, McGregor had seriously insulted him in the pre-fight build up.

"But I don't understand how people can talk about how I jump on the cage. He talked about my religion, he talked about my country, he talked about my father.

"This is a respectful sport, not a trash-talking sport. I want to change the game, you cannot talk about religion, about nationality."

THEORY 5 – Revenge for Conor McGregor attacking Khabib’s bus

This incident in April ignited the two stars rivalry and triggered the bad blood between the pair.

McGregor showed up at Barclays Center after the conclusion of a UFC 223 media day on April 5 looking to confront Khabib.

He then threw a steel dolly through the window of a bus carrying Khabib, injuring several other fighters and some UFC stuff.

Khabib said: "He came to Brooklyn and he broke a bus, he almost killed a couple of people. What about this s***? Why do people talk about me jumping over the cage? I don't understand."

Khabib continues to reiterate that although he accepts that what he did in the aftermath of the fight was a mistake, the actions of ‘The Notorious’ throughout the last couple of months could arguably be seen as just as bad.

It is difficult to single out one reason why the Russian lost his cool but these five theories give us the insight to why Khabib reacted to his win in the way he did.
