Virgil van Dijk looks more and more like a £75m bargain as the weeks go by.

Liverpool took a big gamble in splashing a world-record fee for a defender on the Dutchman back in January.

There had been issues in getting him from Southampton, but they finally agreed to match their valuation.

Ever since his addition to the squad, Liverpool have looked a different team.

Dejan Lovren, Joe Gomez, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson have all improved as players with Van Dijk at the heart of defence.

But just how good is Van Dijk? Is he the best in the Premier League or should he now be considered as the best in the world?

Well, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has offered his thoughts on that argument and has given a very honest take.

Carragher believes Van Dijk must add trophies to his record if he's going to be considered in the same bracket as Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos.

He told Soccer AM: “I think he’s right in the top group. Some people may put him top.

“I would just hang fire with that with the fact he hasn’t won the biggest trophies yet. I think you have to do that.

“You want to be known as the best in whatever position, you’ve got to have something on the CV - Premier League, Champions League.

“He got to the final last season. But I think the two players at the other end of the pitch in Ramos and Varane, not so much that they’re better players than Virgil van Dijk, but they’ve won Champions Leagues, both won the World Cup.

“When you’ve got that on the CV, it’s hard to look past.”

Liverpool look like they will challenge for numerous trophies this season and it could see Van Dijk's status in the game elevated as a result.
