Conor McGregor tried his best to get inside Khabib Nurmagomedov’s head.

Trash-talking has been a part of McGregor’s arsenal throughout his UFC career and it helped him to become the first simultaneous two-division champion in the promotion’s history.

So it was hardly a surprise that the Irishman tried to unsettle Nurmagomedov in the build up to their title fight in Las Vegas.

McGregor taunted the Russian in the weeks before their fight - and things got personal.

The Notorious insulted Nurmagomedov’s family and friends and even his religion and culture.

McGregor also offered the 27-0 star, who practices Islam, a glass of whiskey during one press conference.

Mystic Mac was overheard apologising to Nurmagomedov for the comments he made at the end of the third round.

Khabib's reaction in camp

“It’s only business,” McGregor said to his opponent.

That’s not a suitable defence, though, and many are now sympathising with Nurmagomedov following his actions at the end of his fight.

The lightweight champion had seen enough of McGregor to know that the Dubliner would run his mouth. According to his trainer, he was unfazed by it all.

Speaking to Obviously Fight Talk, Myles Price, who used to train with McGregor but joined Nurmagomedov’s camp for UFC 229, has revealed how Khabib reacted to his opponent’s taunts.

“He kept very cool and calm in the gym,” Price said. “He treated it like any other fight.

“The only things he ever said to me was, ‘this is a mental game, you have to understand, this is all a mental game.’

“And I was like, ‘I’m from Ireland, I trained with the fellow, he is mental!’

“He had it spot on, he was dead right in what he was saying.

“I think after the fight he felt like he could let go of that, and that’s when the antics came out.

“He held it in, and had a leash on it for so long that after the fight it just overcame him.”

Nurmagomedov was able to keep his emotions in check when it mattered, though, and he’s now 27-0.
