Lionel Messi v Kylian Mbappe aged 19: Football fan posts tweet about the debate

Kylian Mbappe is the best 19-year-old on the planet right now.

The French striker is the favourite to win the first ever Kopa Trophy following a year in which he joined the game’s very best players.

It’s safe to say that 2018 has been Mbappe’s year.

He helped Paris Saint-Germain win a domestic treble, scoring 21 goals in all competitions for the club.

Then came the World Cup, where Mbappe was a part of the France side that won the country’s second title.

The teenager scored four goals in Russia as he collected the World Cup Best Young Player award.

It’s left everyone wondering just how good Mbappe can become.

Messi v Mbappe

It seems like a certainty that he will win the Ballon d’Or one day.

But the big question is whether he will ever reach Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo’s level.

Sport Witness have posted an interesting graphic comparing Mbappe’s goalscoring record with Messi’s at the age of 19.

But is Mbappe really a better player than Messi was at this point in his career?

Not according to Twitter user @Kloppholic, who has posted a very interesting tweet about the two players.

“The 19 y/o Messi vs 19 y/o Mbappe is one of the most pathetic debates on this platform,” @Kloppholic wrote.

“Leo was running rings around Real Madrid at 19, Mbappe is busy stat padding in Europe’s worst top five League.

“Getting carried to a World Cup has so many people disillusioned it’s shocking.”

The tweet references the hat-trick that Messi scored as a 19-year-old against Real Madrid.

This clip of Messi in his final year as a teenager shows just how good he was.

The fan has caused a stir with his tweet, though, particularly for suggesting that Mbappe was carried to World Cup glory.

It's certainly harsh to ignore Mbappe's record in Europe.

He's scored against some of the biggest teams in the Champions League, including Manchester City, Borussia Dortmund, Liverpool, Juventus and Bayern Munich.

Mbappe has also scored 12 goals in 16 starts in the competition. That's mightily impressive.

It's important to remember that Messi won his first Ballon d'Or at the age of 22.

That has to be the target for Mbappe.
