No superstar in WWE history has divided opinion like John Cena. Even Roman Reigns is only close, he's not quite Cena.

Since 2002 until about 2017, the Leader of the Cenation was a constant on WWE television and after turning face around 2004, he never went heel again.

That was a source of great frustration to WWE fans who were sick of seeing the same old story; Cena coined the underdog and overcoming the odds.

Despite nearly turning against The Rock during their iconic feud, Cena remained a good guy and has ventured into Hollywood in the winter of his in-ring career, something else WWE fans don't seem to appreciate.

The Rock found out in 2002 how the WWE fans react to a superstar prioritising movies over wrestling, and it appears as though Cena is now getting the same criticism.

For the longest time, fans claimed Cena needed to step aside and let the new wave of talent take over the main event scene. But, now he has slipped into a part-time role, the 16-time world champion has heard complaints that he is not around.

In an interview with Jimmy Traina's SI Media Podcast, Cena addressed those very fans.

"I don't care about the reputation I have", Cena revealed. "What I care about is the performance I give. But the easiest way to just silence that problem is to take me out of the equation. Here's the crazy thing, all the people that have chastised me for staying around too long, are now chastising me for not being around.

"(It's) also a great exercise to know that you will never be able to please these people, because they always need something to be cynical about. I guess that's why they are called critics."

Fans have always found a reason to criticise Cena and it doesn't look like that will change anytime soon. Regardless of that, he's had a true Hall of Fame career and, as Michael Cole likes to constantly remind us, he can rightly be regarded as one of the greatest of all-time.
