Scoring goals in an England shirt is certainly not an easy thing to do.

Some of the Premier League's finest marksman have struggled in the Three Lions shirt down the years.

Andrew Cole, Robbie Fowler and Ian Wright are just three examples of world-class strikers failing to perform for England.

In the present day, Marcus Rashford is feeling the same pressure of performing on international duty.

The Manchester United man scored twice in the last break against Spain and Switzerland, but endured a bit of a nightmare in the 0-0 draw with Croatia.

Rashford missed two absolute sitters in Rijeka and fans are beginning to worry about his consistency after his struggles under Jose Mourinho.

Alan Shearer has regularly praised Rashford ever since he burst onto the scene in 2016, but even he is raising serious concerns.

The Newcastle legend was discussing Jadon Sancho's 15-minute cameo against Croatia, before weighing in on the Rashford situation.

"But I don’t want to see too much of a burden put on him [Sancho] too early," Shearer wrote in The Sun.

"Marcus Rashford has suffered because of that. He was rushed into the Manchester United team when he really wasn’t ready and now he is paying the price for that a little bit.

"He was a raw kid with a carefree attitude but expectations rose too quickly.

"He wasn’t allowed to develop at his own pace and just kept being thrust out there.

"Rashford is a good player, don’t get me wrong, but he needs to be nurtured along.

"He’s lost a little confidence judging by the misses against Newcastle last week and the couple of chances he failed to convert against Croatia."

Shearer raises a good point.

The issue with a player bursting onto the scene in the manner Rashford did is the weight of expectation.

Unless you have the talent of Kylian Mbappe, it's a seriously difficult thing to cope with.
