Floyd Mayweather has posted on his Instagram page to fire shots at one of his old rivals, Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez.

Mayweather defeated Alvarez on a points decision back in 2013, which took his record at the time to 45-0, and since then has gone on to win five more bouts, including his latest, stopping UFC fighter Conor McGregor in 10 rounds to take his total up to an incredible 50-0.

It is the only defeat Canelo has suffered to date and one that he would love to seek revenge for, having recently opened the door for a possible rematch in the future.

And following the news that Alvarez has signed an 11-fight deal with broadcaster DAZN, which will earn the Mexican a reported $365 million, and make him the highest paid athlete in the world, Mayweather couldn't resist firing some shots back.

Alongside a picture from their fight five years ago, Mayweather wrote: "It didn't matter if Canelo ate his PED steak or not this night, this was by far the easiest fight of my career!"

"Connor McQuitter was a way better fighter than Canelo's cheating ass and I beat the brakes off him too! It takes me 36 mins or less to make $300m plus."

Clearly bemused that Alvarez has been given this deal, and not to be outdone, Mayweather continued: "It literally takes me one night and one fight to make what you might make in five years and 11 fights! So really, who's still winning? You do the math!"

Mayweather is rumoured to be returning to the ring with a potential rematch with Manny Pacquiao lined up, but Alvarez is hopeful he can tempt the unbeaten star into another clash with himself.

Speaking to TMZ, Alvarez said: "He (Mayweather) wants to continue hurting boxing by making fights that don't make sense... and not giving boxing the credibility it deserves."

"If he wants to return, I ask him to look my way to give a great fight to the fans. Let's do the second fight. It's very important. We have something pending there, so let's make the second fight."

It looks like it has been put on a plate for Mayweather to return to the ring against Alvarez, but whether the American will actually accept the challenge remains to be seen.

A match-up between Mayweather and Khabib Nurmagomedov has also been discussed, with both men signaling their intent to face each other.

Whoever the eventual opponent turns out to be, you can expect another money-spinning event.
