There are reports that Neymar is eager to leave Paris Saint-Germain.

The Brazilian superstar has made an impact in France since his world-record €222 million move from Barcelona in 2017 - but he’s not entirely happy.

Neymar left the Camp Nou to escape Lionel Messi’s shadow.

But he didn’t foresee the meteoric rise of Kylian Mbappe, who has enjoyed a sensational year for club and country.

So now Neymar wants to leave the Parc des Princes. There are rumours of a potential return to Barcelona, or a stunning move to Real Madrid.

The 26-year-old has been exceptional for PSG, scoring 39 goals in 41 appearances for the club.

Yet the jury remains out on how close he is to Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo’s level, with BBC Sport readers voting Eden Hazard as the third-best player in the world this week.

Xavi: Neymar can improve

One player who knows both Neymar and Messi extremely well is Xavi, who played with the pair at Barcelona before joining Qatari club Al Sadd in 2015.

And although Xavi considers Neymar among the best players in the sport, he believes that the PSG forward needs to mature in order to reach Messi’s level.

“They are different. I see Leo with great footballing maturity. He does everything well,” Xavi told Super Deportivo de Villa Trinidad, per Goal.

“Neymar is a person who has to mature, but he seems like a player with enormous capacity to make a difference.

"Although he could improve, he is among the top players in the world."

Xavi makes a good point.

Neymar was sent off for barging into Marseille’s Lucas Ocampos last October.

And then there was the bust-up with Edinson Cavani last season, a display that didn’t reflect well on the Brazil international.

Neymar doesn’t turn 27 until February and clearly has the talent to be in the conversation to win a Ballon d’Or.

But he isn’t the full package just yet.
