Georges St-Pierre is widely regarded as one of the best fighters ever to grave the UFC, and rightfully so.St-Pierre held the UFC welterweight world title on two occasions and defended the strap successfully on nine occasions. The French-Canadian also held the record for most wins in title bout action while also owning the the second longest combined title streak, second only to former middleweight champion Anderson Silva.St-Pierre went undefeated for six years before he retired in 2013 having narrowly defeated Johny Hendricks at UFC 167 via split-decision.‘Rush’ would eventually return to the UFC in November 2017, when he defeated Michael Bisping via third round submission to win the middleweight world title.'GSP' would become only the fourth fighter at the time to hold belts in two different weight divisions- Randy Couture, BJ Penn, Conor McGregor and more recently Daniel Cormier have since shared the same feat. However, after claiming the middleweight strap, St-Pierre claimed he wouldn’t stay at the 185lbs limit, as he cited the additional weight was too much to handle, and the Canadian has since expressed his interest to drop down two divisions to challenge for the lightweight crown.

White on GSP's chances of fighting for the lightweight title

With Khabib Nurmagomedov, last seen submitting Conor McGregor at UFC 229, holding the 155lbs title, St-Pierre told Ariel Helwani on his ESPN podcast it would likely be challenge for the lightweight belt or retirement.

UFC president Dana White however, told ESPN the idea of dropping to lightweight and immediately challenging for the world title wasn’t a realistic demand.

“How does Georges St-Pierre jump over all the guys fighting in that division to face Khabib?” White said.

“Just because all of a sudden he wants to come out and fight this guy — he doesn’t get to do that.

“If Georges St-Pierre is serious, listen, I’ll give you a fight with one of these guys in the top five. If you win, you’ll be in position for a title shot.

“We don’t even know if Georges St-Pierre can make 155 pounds. You know what I mean?”
White’s reluctance to give St-Pierre an immediate title shot without facing anyone in the division is a fair assessment.

Although only two years ago McGregor was handed a lightweight title fight with Eddie Alvarez having never competed at that weight within the UFC.

However, McGregor had not only competed at lightweight before entering the UFC, he held a belt at the weight, having captured the Cage Warriors 155lbs title, just before debuting in the UFC.

Whereas St-Pierre hasn’t been down to lightweight, two divisions above his last outing at middleweight.

Despite Dana White’s reluctance, it’s been reported St-Pierre has been cutting to the 155lbs limit to test his ability to make the weight, so it’s clear the UFC legend has Nurmagomedov or the lightweight crown in his sights.
