Wayne Rooney is lighting up MLS right now.

The former England captain has made an immediate impact at DC United following his arrival in June.

The Eastern Conference side were bottom of the table when Rooney signed.

Now, they are on the verge of reaching the playoffs.

Rooney has scored 10 goals in 17 matches, including that stunning free-kick against Toronto FC on Wednesday.

It’s left Premier League fans wondering whether the 32-year-old left England’s top flight too soon.

Rooney wasn’t a regular at Manchester United when they allowed him to leave in 2017.

Rooney's transfer request in 2010

And what was supposed to be a two-year stint at Everton turned into just one forgettable season.

It was a sorry way for his remarkable career in England to end.

But Man United fans will remember the good times: the hat-trick on his debut; the overhead kick against Manchester City.

They certainly won’t want to recall the time he submitted a transfer request.

It was in October 2010. Rooney had made a poor start to the season and his agent, Paul Stretford, told the club’s chief executive at the time David Gill that he wanted to leave.

Rooney was even prepared to sign for United’s biggest rivals, Manchester City.

It led to an emotional response from Sir Alex Ferguson, who accused Rooney of personally letting him down.

“I'm disappointed, very disappointed, I can't believe it," Ferguson said.

“He had told us he was happy at the club, that he was at the best club in the world, so I must say it was terribly disappointing to get the news because I can't quite understand it.

“I had a meeting with him and he intimated it to me [that he wanted to leave] in his own way.

“I said: 'The only thing I want from you is to respect the club's position and its traditions and behave like a proper professional and we will try to see it through.'

"And, you know, I don't know if he has done that.

"Since the minute he's come to the club, we've always been a harbour for him - any time he has been in trouble, the advice we have given him, we have done nothing but help him.

“I was even prepared to give him financial advice, many times.

“I don't know how many times we have helped him in terms of his private life and other matters.”

Ferguson was genuinely hurt by the matter.

But he was celebrating just days after making the comments.

Rooney put pen to paper on a five-year deal at Old Trafford on October 22, 2010, worth a reported £180,000-per-week.

The forward issued an apology to Ferguson and his teammates, and he quickly set about helping Man United win a record 19th league title.
