Steven Gerrard’s time in Scotland has got off to a pretty good start.

After being appointed Rangers manager, the Liverpool legend set the famous old club on a path back towards the top of the Scottish game.

While Rangers lie sixth in the Scottish Premiership, they are only five points off the top.

Gerrard even managed to lead the club back into the Europa League where they were laced in a tough group with Villareal, Rapid Wien and Spartak Moscow.

Now the Rangers boss has waded into the debate on the controversy surrounding Paul Gasgoigne’s omission from the Scottish Football Hall of Fame.

Having settled into the Scottish football scene well, Gerrard has urged the Hall of Fame organisers to see sense and add Gascoigne to the list of greats.

“I was disappointed with the decision. I was gutted for him and it’s the wrong decision, he should be in there. Hopefully one day they see sense and it gets resurrected,” said Gerrard.

"I guarantee people who have decided not to put him in were on the edge of their couch, jumping round when he was on the TV.

“If they are football people, they would have enjoyed watching Paul Gascoigne and they would appreciate the man as a footballer. He should be in.

“He was my England hero growing up. I had Johnny Barnes and Ian Rush at Liverpool and Gazza for England.

“The 1990 World Cup was the first I followed and he was terrific in the competition. He was one of the best players in the world at the time and I bought the DVDs, the shirts and the videos.

“I was only a youngster when I first played against him and it was just ‘wow’ for me to be on the same pitch. To grace the same turf as Gazza, who was my hero, was unbelievable.”

Gerrard not mincing his words.

Having initially favoured the move to induct Gazza, organisers performed a bizarre u-turn after fears that Scottish Football Association board members might snub any sort of induction ceremony.

Gascoigne spent three years at Rangers during his playing days, and it is clear to see that Gerrard fully believes he has done enough to be worthy of the accolade.
