After four games without a win before the international break, Liverpool needed to bounce back against Huddersfield at the John Smith’s Stadium. With Manchester City beating Burnley 5-0 earlier in the afternoon, Jurgen Klopp’s side required a win to keep pace with last season’s champions. But the international break wasn’t kind to Liverpool and a number of first-team regulars returned to Melwood with knocks. It meant Klopp rung the changes for the trip to Huddersfield, with Sadio Mane and Naby Keita ruled out, while Roberto Firmino was only a substitute. It meant there were rare starts for Daniel Sturridge and summer signing Xherdan Shaqiri. Also starting was Adam Lallana. The midfielder has struggled with injuries for a lengthy period but after, naming him in the starting XI, Klopp insisted that he had impressed in training recently.“Adam Lallana trained very well and has had all week to train with us so I made the decision,” Klopp said.“He has been quite impressive this week, hopefully he can replicate that on the pitch - that would be cool!”And although Liverpool won thanks to Mohamed Salah scoring the only goal of the match, Lallana didn’t particularly impress with his performance. He lasted 69 minutes before being replaced by Fabinho, with Lallana telling Klopp that he “had cramp in both calves” shortly before his departure.

LIVERPOOL FANS REACT TO LALLANA’S PERFORMANCE

Oh dear.

To be fair, the 30-year-old will take a while to get back to full fitness and Klopp admits that he’s going to have to “trust” his body again after such a long time out.

“There is not a perfect plan for it. We have to make sure that he trusts his body. I can trust his body,” said Klopp.

“I love him as a player and as a person. His style is always full of desire and confidence. Having a setback wasn’t nice and now we need to get used to it.

“We have to see how we deal with it. We have many specialists around talking constantly about things like this. I am pretty sure we will make the right decision.

“Making Adam as fit and resistant as possible has been the plan and he looks really good. It’s a bit like Daniel [Sturridge]. In the moment when it’s right, it’s right and you forget about it immediately.”
