You’ve got to give Usain Bolt credit for his sheer determination to make a career for himself in football.

The fastest man in the world has previously insisted that he’s good enough to play for Manchester United and has even trained with Borussia Dortmund.

Training with the Bundesliga giants may well have been a PR stunt considering the Puma connection but recently, Bolt has been on trial at Australian side Central Coast Mariners.

And it seems this time it’s genuine.

The Jamaican sprinter has played in a couple of friendlies and even scored twice in a friendly match in Sydney.

On the back of that, the 32-year-old was offered a two-year deal by Maltese club Valletta FC - which Bolt politely declined.

And now, the Mariners have made their decision on Bolt.

Remarkably, according to The Australian, they’ve offered Bolt a contract.

The report states: “Central Coast Mariners have moved one step closer to signing Usain Bolt, with the A-League club believed to have tabled a played contract to the sprint legend’s management.

"The offer is understood to have been made by Mariners chief executive Shaun Mielekamp this weekend. Bolt was in Melbourne considering his options, while the Mariners are away for their first game of the season to the Brisbane Roar tonight.”

There is no information on the details of the contract and Mariners chief executive Shaun Mielekamp refused to comment on the report by saying: “I can’t comment … and I want to concentrate on the game (against the Roar),” when asked if it was true.

While Bolt has clearly done enough to impress staff at the Central Coast Mariners, the 100m world-record holder hasn’t convinced everyone.

Western Sydney Wanders coach Markus Babbel, a former German international and Liverpool player, said in an interview with Swiss newspaper Blick he had big doubts over Bolt’s football abilities.

“As a PR action it is sensational,” Babbel told Blick.

“The A-League receives much attention from him. But, honestly, I cannot take that seriously. I saw him play. For all that love, that’s not enough in 100 years.”

But it seems Bolt’s dreams of becoming a professional footballer has just taken a massive step forward.
