Conor McGregor has proclaimed compatriot Katie Taylor is an “Irish hero” after her dominant victory by unanimous decision over Cindy Serrano to retain both her IBF and WBA lightweight titles.Taylor was the heavy favourite going into the bout and even though it went the distance, the Bray native was in control throughout the fight as she took her professional record to 11-0 in front of a sell-out crowd at Boston’s TD Garden. One man in attendance last night was former two-weight UFC world champion McGregor, fresh off his brutal defeat at the hands of Russia’s Khabib Nurmagomedov. The UFC phenom certainly showed his appreciation towards the plethora of young Irish boxing talent that was on show for all to see on last night’s card.McGregor delivered to Taylor a passionate pre-fight motivational speech, swiftly before she took to the ring where he emphasised just how much admiration he has for her.“This will be my first time watching you live, I’m very excited,” he said.“You’re a credit to our country, we’re all with you. I’m here for you Katie, just you!”Following Taylor’s victory, which was scored 100-90 by all three judges, McGregor congratulated his compatriot in the locker room and wasn’t shy when praising Taylor’s performance.“You’re a f***ing animal! I’ll give you that. You’re an Irish hero and I’m proud of you for who you are as a woman, not even as just a boxer,” he said.

“Inside the ring – of course — but outside the ring as well, I’ve a lot of respect for you.”

He later took to Instagram to further congratulate the undefeated champion.

“What an honour to watch our very own Katie Taylor live tonight in Boston! This lady epitomises hard work, passion, drive, and laser-like focus! A motivating inspiration!

“Congrats Katie and coach Ross Enamait! Promoter Eddie Hearn and Manager Brian Peters, you both better be making sure our champion is looked after and guided fairly and correctly up that money tree as her activity is constant and consistent.

“This lady is an asset and should be treated as such. We are watching. Great work team Katie!”
