Ben Woodburn’s loan spell at Sheffield United isn’t working out too well. While fellow Liverpool loanee Harry Wilson is receiving congratulatory texts from Jurgen Klopp, Woodburn is struggling for game time at Bramall Lane. The 19-year-old has made just seven appearances for the Blades, the last of which came in a 13-minute cameo on September 19.It’s pretty concerning stuff for Woodburn, and it hasn’t escaped the attention at Liverpool.Woodburn started for the Reds’ Under-23s in their match against Derby County. He hasn’t been recalled from his loan spell at Sheffield United, though.

“Chance for him to get some much needed game time,” Liverpool Echo reporter James Pearce wrote on Twitter.

Why Woodburn can play for U23s

Indeed. Woodburn has managed 90 minutes just once for Sheffield United.

Some Liverpool fans may be wondering why Woodburn is allowed to play for the club’s Under-23s when he remains at Sheffield United.

One supporter, going by Dynamite1978 on Twitter, has explained why that’s possible.

Apparently, Woodburn is allowed to play for Liverpool’s Under-23s if he hasn’t been named in  Sheffield United’s most recent squad.

As Woodburn was left out of the team that lost to Derby County on Saturday, he is eligible for Liverpool’s youth team.

The Welshman hasn’t been included in a matchday squad since Sheffield United played against Preston on September 22.

So it makes complete sense for Liverpool to give him minutes in the Under-23s.

Woodburn, who joined the club’s academy at the age of eight, first made his mark when he became the youngster goalscorer in Liverpool’s history in 2016.

The forward was 17 when he came off the bench to score against Leeds United in a League Cup tie.

Woodburn had made his Premier League debut just a few days before that memorable night as expectation surrounding him grew.

This season hasn’t started as he would have liked but more action for Liverpool’s youth side will serve him well.

Klopp has proven that he’s ready to give opportunities to young players, and that will be the case with Woodburn if he proves something to him.
