Chris Weidman's classy message to Luke Rockhold after their UFC 230 fight was cancelled

Chris Weidman.

At UFC 194 in December 2015, Luke Rockhold shook the MMA world by defeating Chris Weidman for his Middleweight championship.

It was the first loss of Weidman's career, and after defeating the likes of Anderson Silva, Lyoto Machida and Vitor Belfort, the odds were heavily in his favour.

A fourth round knockout saw Rockhold take the title though, and the Californian wouldn't even make a successful defence, after Michael Bisping dethroned him in his very next fight.

Weidman's career also went into a bit of a tailspin following the loss, racking up consecutive defeats to Yoel Romero and Gegard Mousasi.

However a win over Kevin Gastelum in July 2017 got Weidman back on track, and surprisingly he hasn't fought since then.

So the rematch between Rockhold and Weidman was pencilled in for November 3 at Madison Square Garden - but it will have to wait just a little while longer.

Rockhold told Ariel Helwani that his left shin has become re-infected, sprained his right knee and recently broke his nose, which is a hell of a lot to happen in such a short period of time.

Luke Rockhold has suffered multiple injuries in the build-up to his UFC 230 fight with Chris Weidman, forcing an unfortunate postponement.

You could be forgiven for thinking Weidman would be angry about the fight being postponed at short notice, but it was completely the opposite, with Weidman sending a classy tweet to Rockhold after hearing about his injuries.

Weidman stated in the tweet: "I was really looking forward to fighting Luke in this rematch but unfortunately it wasn’t in the cards this time around.

"This is a tough sport. I’m hoping and praying Luke makes a quick recovery and returns to good health."

You can't buy sportsmanship like that - and you go can even go back to their first fight where they were respectful to each other in the pre-fight press conferences and weigh-ins

With Rockhold's recovery expected to last around four weeks, Ronaldo 'Jacare' Souza has been drafted in as a replacement.

Souza was already fighting David Branch on the card, but the Brazilian has been moved up the billing to take on Weidman.
