There's no doubt about it, Gianluigi Buffon is one of the greatest goalkeepers in history.

Across a remarkable 17 years with Juventus, the Italian proved himself to be one of the world's best shot stoppers and he won no less than 11 Scudetti alongside 10 other major honours.

Not only that but he reached the pinnacle of the sport by winning the World Cup with Italy in 2006.

Perhaps the only missing from Buffon's brimming troops cabinet is the Champions League, a competition he reached the final for in 2003, 2015 and 2017.

However, Buffon can still look back on an incredible career in the sport and is currently unwilling his career with French champions Paris Saint-Germain.

Buffon at PSG

At the age of 40, most goalkeepers would either be retired or relaxing in a lesser league with their feet up but Buffon is still competing at one of Europe's top clubs.

And although he's not the goalkeeper he used to be, Buffon remains in the conversation of the world's best shot stoppers.

Even if he'd fall short of most people's top fives these days, he's still one of the best in the world and is certainly qualified to choose between his colleagues.

Buffon's top three goalkeepers

In fact, France's Club Canal Foot wanted to put that to the test by asking Buffon about the current crop of goalkeepers and who he thought was the best.

Although the PSG man didn't give a conclusive list, he was asked for his top three goalkeepers and gave an interesting answer.

Buffon responded: "You want three names but I will forget 100. So I will say: Neuer of course, De Gea and Oblak... then there are others: Courtois, Navas. We are in an era where there are many great keepers."

Pretty hard to argue with his choices, to be fair.

Jan Oblak boasts an incredible record at Atletico Madrid so has to be mentioned and De Gea - his World Cup aside - has enjoyed a very impressive 2018.

Neuer has spent most of the year injured, but has achieved so much in recent seasons that he's got to be in contention regardless.

The likes of Alisson Becker, Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Ederson can probably count themselves unlucky not to get a namedrop, yet Buffon has made his stance clear.

It's also pretty hard to argue with an authority like Buffon who has been almost unprecedented in his ability to reach world-class standards and remain there for decades.

Inevitably, Buffon will hang up his gloves in the years to come and it will be interesting to see who legend considers the very best then.

For the moment, the trio of De Gea, Oblak and Neuer can enjoy their time in the sun.
