There wasn't much for Manchester United fans to cheer about against Juventus on Tuesday night. The victory over Newcastle United and coming so close to an away win at Chelsea looked to have inspired a turnaround, but defeat to the Old Lady has given United another untimely blow. The Red Devils looked second best in their own stadium, struggling to keep control of possession and quickly running out of ideas in the final third.Juventus, by contrast, flew out of the blocks and took the lead after 17 minutes with Paulo Dybala finished from close range. The home side eventually settled into the game, coming close after the break virtue of Paul Pogba but still had to call upon David de Gea at crucial moments.

Man Utd 0-1 Juventus

Cristiano Ronaldo came close on a number of opportunities, nearly bagging a goal on his Old Trafford return if it wasn't for the acrobatics of the United shot stopper.

In the end, Juventus held onto their 1-0 lead and there were few players in the United team who could hold their head high after the result.

Romelu Lukaku looked static up front, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford were neutralised by the Juventus backline and even Luke Shaw had something of an off offday.

Widespread praise for Lindelof

Somebody who could feel proud of themselves at the full-time, though, was a certain Victor Lindelof.

Despite facing one of Europe's most dynamic attacking forces, the Swede made a mockery of the criticism aimed at him this season with an impressive performance at the back.

It wasn't just the fans that noticed Lindelof's display either, with Gary Neville giving him a special mention in his summary tweet.

Check out the reaction to him below:

Although it won't cheer up United fans, it's a massive positive to take from the game.

Lindelof had been panned for some of his early season performances and there even questions raised about his suitability for the Champions League and top level Premier League clashes.

Again Juventus, however, he certainly proved that he can mix it with the big guns and Mourinho surely can't have missed this anomalous positive.

The United boss hasn't shown much faith in Lindelof in the past, preferring everyone from Pogba to Scott McTominay ahead of him during the Newcastle game.

Nevertheless, on a night where the Red Devils had so little to cheer about, Lindelof has given his manager plenty to ponder going forward.

If everybody can delivered a Lindelof-like performance for the club against Everton this weekend, then things might start looking up for United.
