Dean Ambrose shocked the WWE Universe on Monday Night Raw by turning on his partner Seth Rollins.

It was an emotional night in Providence, with Roman Reigns opening the show to announce his battle with leukemia.

Ambrose and Rollins met their Shield compatriot Reigns at the top of the stage for an emotional embrace, in what could be their last moment together on WWE television for a while.

The two were given a chance at redemption over Dolph Ziggler and Drew McIntyre though, getting a shot at their Raw Tag Team Championships after Ambrose pinned Ziggler on the previous episode of Raw in a six-man tag match.

And after Braun Strowman chased off McIntyre from the match after their alliance went sour the previous week, it left Ziggler alone and the prey of the two remaining Shield members.

Rollins subsequently Curbstomped his way to reclaiming tag team gold, but that wasn't the end of things.

As Ambrose and Rollins hugged in the middle of the ring, the Lunatic Fringe quickly dropped his belt and delivered a Dirty Deeds to a shellshocked Kingslayer.

Ambrose continued a brutal assault on the outside of the ring, hitting another Dirty Deeds but this time on the exposed concrete floor, before making his way through the crowd to end the broadcast.

It really played with people's emotions, especially on the night that Reigns revealed such devastating news - but it wasn't originally meant to happen this week.

Wrestling Observer Live have revealed, per Cageside Seats, that the heel turn of Ambrose was not supposed to happen until 'around Survivor Series', and because of Reigns' hiatus is had to be brought forward - and from a 'heat' standpoint they couldn't have timed it better.

A heel Ambrose brings some interesting dynamics. It could mean his 'lunatic' character becomes even more deranged, and with his wife Renee Young being a commentator on Monday Night Raw, it will be interesting to see how that aspect plays out, considering she was almost silent when the turn occurred.
