If you thought most Manchester United were enduring a rather miserable season so far, then spare a thought for Matteo Darmian. The arrival of Diogo Dalot this summer all but signalled the end of any last hopes the Italian might have had of forcing his way into Jose Mourinho's thinking. The full-back started the opening game of the campaign against Leicester, but that was the last we saw of him.Since then, Antonio Valencia, Dalot, and even Ashley Young have all been preferred.United fans might be forgiven for forgetting all about the 28-year-old, who has long been linked with a return to Serie A.However, Darmian returned to their attention at long last on Thursday - which is, of course, Europa League night - with a bizarre tweet.

Darmian's tweet

Two days after the 1-0 defeat to Juventus in the Champions League, he posted a picture of himself on the bench with the caption:

"Looking forward to #UCL."

It's not uncommon for footballers to be sent content by their PR team or even the club, but who thought this was a good idea?

A whole two days late - that Wi-Fi at Old Trafford really is playing up this season. Paul Pogba will tell you.

United fans were a little confused

Unfortunately, Darmian's ill-timed social media activity is the least of anyone's worries following another disappointing night on (*checks notes*) Tuesday.

The Red Devils have won just one of their last seven games in all competitions, a run which has included losses to Derby County and West Ham.

Even more disappointingly, they seemed to make little attempt to attack the Bianconeri and ended up with the inevitable result.

As for Darmian, he remains on the sidelines, though he at least made the matchday squad against the Old Lady.

Mourinho confirmed in the summer that the defender wants to leave United but that the club are yet to receive an acceptable offer.

No wonder Darmian is a little confused.
