WWE fans and superstars alike were deeply saddened to hear on Monday Night Raw this past week that Roman Reigns would be taking some time away from the ring in order to treat his leukaemia.

In the middle of the ring, The Big Dog went public and told the world that his cancer from his early 20s had returned from remission and as a result, he would be relinquishing the Universal Championship in order to receive treatment.

After laying down the title in the middle of the ring, Reigns walked back up the ramp but before he could go backstage, he was greeted by his Shield brothers, Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins, who gave him a big hug and performed their iconic Shield fist bump.

According to reports, only a handful of people actually knew what The Big Dog was going to do when he opened up Monday Night Raw this week.

Dave Meltzer of F4WOnline.com, via NoDQ, has reported that only Kevin Dunn, Triple H, Mark Carrano in talent relations and writers Dave Kapoor and Ed Koskey knew what Reigns was going to say.

Allegedly, Ambrose and Rollins only knew that their Shield brother would be relinquishing the Universal Championship and not that it was due to his cancer returning.

Meltzer also noted that Reigns reportedly found out about his diagnosis either on or right before last Thursday, and Vince McMahon found out that night. WWE began making plans on how to move forward the following day.

It's strange that Ambrose and Rollins weren't told the full story about Reigns situation before the start of Raw this week given how close they are to The Big Dog due to their time together as The Shield.

Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins didn't know Roman Reigns was dropping the title due to cancer

Those plans as to how WWE will move forward without Reigns have come into effect already, as they've already pulled him out of the Universal Championship match at Crown Jewel.

WWE has also kicked off a storyline between Ambrose and Rollins, as The Lunatic Fringe turned heel on The Kingslayer this week on Raw after they had captured the Raw Tag Team titles in the show's main event.

Fingers crossed Reigns is able to return to action for the WWE very soon, as the company won't be the same without him.
