We're almost at the halfway point of the 2018 NFL season, and it's here that we get an idea as to which teams will be in the playoff hunt and which teams will be staring at the number one overall pick by the end of the year.

The pressure is on several head coaches and teams to perform between now and the end of the season, otherwise, they could find themselves out of a job by that point.

Teams might possibly be encouraged to send a head coach packing sooner in order to try and salvage what should have been a promising season for their franchise.

With that in mind, here are five NFL head coaches who currently find themselves on the hot seat at their respective teams this season.

Just missing the cut...

  • Pat Shurmur - New York Giants - Shurmur could be given more time due to Eli Manning's poor play over the past two seasons, but the pressure is already on him.
  • Frank Reich - Indianapolis Colts - Reich has dealt with injuries to his key offensive weapons and has inherited a poor defense, but he must build this team up again quickly.
  • Jay Gruden - Washington Redskins - Gruden will likely be fired if the Redskins miss out on the playoffs, but they currently sit at the top of the NFC East.
  • Jason Garrett - Dallas Cowboys - It's now or never for Garrett and the Cowboys, but they're staying competitive in the NFC East for now, so he stays off the main list.
  • Dirk Koetter - Tampa Bay Buccaneers - The strong start to the season has bought Koetter time at the Bucs, but the results now appear to be catching up to him.

Hue Jackson - Cleveland Browns

Things have improved since last year for the Browns, as they've won two more games than what they did in 2017. However, they're not taking advantage of the situations they find themselves in. In four overtime games this season, they have a 1-2-1 record.

There is so much talent in Cleveland now that there's simply no excuse for Jackson to fall back on at the end of the season if they don't win six or more games by the end of the year. Even that might not be enough to keep him his job.

Vance Joseph - Denver Broncos

It's been an up and down season for the Broncos. They started off strong before going into a four-game slump, but they managed to turn things around last week against the Cardinals. Now is the time to make sure that streak continues.

If it doesn't, someone is going to lose their job in Denver, and there's a strong chance it will be Joseph. He's already missed out on the playoffs in his first year, John Elway won't allow him to do it in his second too.

Todd Bowles - New York Jets

After barely missing out on the playoffs in his first season as Jets head coach back in 2015, Bowles hasn't come close to making the postseason since, and this season looks set out to be no different.

He signed an extension to continue as coach through 2020 last season, but this won't stop the Jets from pulling the trigger this year if they see no signs of improvement, and especially if Sam Darnold's progression as an NFL quarterback stalls.

Steve Wilks - Arizona Cardinals

The Cardinals have already made one big coaching change this season as they fired Mike McCoy as their offensive coordinator last week. Wilks could be the next to go if team performances don't improve soon.

Wilks might be able to buy himself some time by saying his has a depleted roster to work with, but Arizona overall is currently playing uninspiring football that doesn't look set to change anytime soon. Wilks could be sent packing as a result.

Mike McCarthy - Green Bay Packers

Last season, the Packers missed out on the playoffs for the first time in years in large part due to the injury of Aaron Rodgers. McCarthy was able to keep his job as a result, but he was put on notice. Improve with Rodgers back, otherwise, you're gone.

This season, the Packers look like they're the same team they were last season despite the addition of Rodgers. If the Packers are on the path to miss out on the playoffs in the highly competitive NFC North, expect him gone sooner rather than later.
