For months, Manchester United have been on the lookout for a director of football.

The club have never previously employed a director of football but, after years of disappointing signings since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson, United are now considering appointing one.

Recently, manager Jose Mourinho and vice-executive Ed Woodward have disagreed on potential signings.

And the Red Devils may look to the likes of Roma’s Monchi and Juventus’ Fabio Paratici to give them a detailed knowledge on the transfer market and potential signings.

But United have been looking for a director of football since September and appear no closer to announcing one.

So who else could they appoint?

Well, many fans have been given the impression that former player Patrice Evra could return in that role.

They’ve come to that conclusion after Evra has been seen sitting next to Woodward recently.

Evra even walked with the United squad, past the mixed zone, and onto the team bus after the 2-2 draw with Chelsea earlier this month. He also shook hands with Mourinho and shared a joke with Paul Pogba.

Why has the 37-year-old suddenly returned to the club?

Well, Manchester Evening News have done some digging and discovered the truth.

The report states: “Ed Woodward and Patrice Evra have just been 'catching up' at Manchester United games and there are no plans for the Frenchman to make a sensational return to Old Trafford.”

"It is just two friends catching up," a source close to Evra told MEN Sport.

Evra has got fans talking with numerous Instagram posts teasing them with a return to the Theatre of Dreams.

In July, Evra posted an image of him kissing the United badge with the caption: “There are players who kisses the badge to get fans in their Pocket!! you will soon understand what that meant to me to play for Manchester United.”

We’re still waiting to understand quite what that message really meant…
