Real Madrid boss Julen Lopetegui is reportedly going to be sacked following Sunday's humiliating 5-1 El Clasico defeat to Barcelona.

Zinedine Zidane's successor has not fared well in the Real Madrid hot seat since taking charge in June.

Los Blancos have taken only one point from their last five La Liga fixtures and currently lie ninth in the table.

The 52-year-old coach was sacked by Spain on the eve of the 2018 World Cup after it emerged he had accepted a job offer from Real Madrid.

"Today is the happiest day in my life”, Lopetegui said at his first Real Madrid press conference.

“He [Cristiano Ronaldo] is the player I want by my side at all times. It's quite clear, the best player in the world is at Real Madrid, I have no doubt at all”.

The club's all-time record goalscorer was sold to Juventus less than a month later.

Real Madrid won the Champions League last season but there have been question marks about the quality of Lopetegui's squad.

In the aftermath of the 5-1 defeat, Lopetegui's father has spoken about the quality of the Real Madrid squad - and has revealed what his son says to him about the players at his disposal.

“Cristiano Ronaldo was good,” said Lopetegui's father, Jose Antonio, to El Mundo. “Was he cocky? We all have defects, but it turns out he scored 50 goals a season.

"He is missing. You are missing a prominent goalscorer. They haven't brought one, not a single one.

“There was talk of Neymar and others, but no one came. They have stolen 50 goals from my son. He has to settle with what he has and don't get me wrong, he is delighted with the players he has.

“He usually says: ‘I have great people, they give everything they've got.’ He doesn't blame the players. But when there is no material, there isn't. There was but he left.”

Lopetegui may refuse to be critical but it's abundantly clear that the departure of Ronaldo massively weakened his squad.
