Earlier this year, Daniel Ricciardo sent shockwaves through the Formula 1 world by opting to jump ship from Red Bull to Renault.

Many thought Ricciardo's move was one influenced by his frustrations in playing second fiddle to teammate Max Verstappen.

However, the Aussie later revealed the switch was more due to his frustrations with the mechanics of Red Bull's cars.

After this weekend's Mexican Grand Prix, Ricciardo can rest easy knowing he probably made the correct decision.

Late into the race, Ricciardo was fighting off Sebastian Vettel for second place, but was forced to retire by what is believed to be a hydraulics problem.

When speaking to Sky Sports after the race, Red Bull Racing boss Christain Horner revealed Verstappen had experienced problems with his car's hydraulics and that Ricciardo's issues were likely to be the same.

He said: "You can see the smoke come out of the back of the car 10 laps from the end.

"It's just gutting for him because he had driven a great race on old tyres, holding off Sebastian [Vettel] before that tell-tale sign of smoke."

However, the Aussie didn't hesitate in letting his feelings known after the race.

He said: "I don't think 'frustration' is the word anymore. Everything feels hopeless.

"Honestly, now where I am, I don't see the point of coming on Sunday, I don't see the point of doing the next two races.

"I haven't had a clean race or weekend in so long. I'm not superstitious or any of this b******t, but the car's cursed. I don't have any more words."

Ricciardo will make way for Pierre Gasly, who will replace him as Red Bull's second driver, joining from Toro Rosso.

However, the Australian has said he cannot wait to escape the curse.

He said: "The car... I'll let Gasly drive it. I'm done with it.

"Helpless I think is the best word. Even today, the starts have been good all weekend, the practice starts, and for the race start, it's all over the place."

Ouch...
