Toto Wolff discusses the reason Lewis Hamilton is so successful

Lewis Hamilton may be the best driver to grace the Formula One track, with legend Michael Schumacher his only rival.

Hamilton won his fifth F1 world title having secured a fourth place finish in the Mexican Grand Prix.

The 33- year-old’s fourth place finish in this year’s final race meant he equalled Juan Manuel Fangio record five world titles as the Brit becomes the joint second most successful F1 driver ever, behind Schumacher who has seven F1 championships.

Hamilton won eight races this year on the way to his record breaking feat, as he also sealed a new deal £40 million with Mercedes.

Fellow Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg has tipped the reigning champion to break Schumacher’s record of most F1 wins, with the German setting the record at 91- Hamilton currently sits on 67.

As well as Rosberg praising the efforts of his teammate, Hamilton’s Mercedes boss Toto Wolff, discussed what makes his driver so successful.

Wolff on what makes Hamilton so successful

Wolff revealed the traits that have lead to five time world champion becoming Britain’s greatest ever racer, and cited this is the best Hamilton he has seen in recent times.

“This is the best Lewis Hamilton that I have seen in the last six years,” Wolff said.

“He has driven better and he has been better out of the car, he was very complete. We had times where the car was good enough to win and then there were times where the car was not good enough to win and he was very stable.

“His race craft is great. That was always one of his strengths, but this year it was definitely one of the key factors.

“I think it is an ability to combine talent with hard work, intellect and emotional intelligence. All great champions have all four of these abilities.

“If one is missing, you can still be a successful racing driver but you are never going to achieve this greatness.

“One of his great character traits is that Lewis always concentrates on today. I think he has strong values that his life has taught him, and he sticks to those values even on difficult days.”
