Arsenal are reportedly tracking Schalke defender Benedikt Höwedes.
The 22-year-old is one of the most exciting talents in the Bundesliga and is understood to have caught the eye of Arsene Wenger since making his Schalke debut at the age of 17.
According to the Daily Mail, Arsenal have been keeping tabs on the German as Wenger looks to reinforce his injury prone defence.
The Arsenal boss added centre-back Laurent Koscielny to his ranks during the summer after letting Sol Campbell, Mikael Silvestre and William Gallas leave the Emirates, but the Frenchman was soon on the sidelines.
Thomas Vermaelen is also a long term injury worry for Wenger and - despite France international Sébastien Squillaci joining the Gunners before the transfer window closed - the Arsenal boss is thought to be on the lookout for another defender.
Höwedes would certainly fit with Wenger's ethos of developing young talent into world stars at Arsenal and he is allegedly poised to make his move for the youngster in January.
