When Chelsea splashed £32 million on a relatively unproven Eden Hazard back in 2012, many football fans were surprised.

The Belgian was just 21-years-old and, although he had impressed in Ligue 1 for Lille, there were doubts whether he could cut it in the Premier League.

Fast forward six years and Hazard is now considered the best player in English football, having scored 97 goals for Chelsea helping them win two Premier League titles, an FA Cup, a League Cup and the Europa League.

The £32 spent on Hazard back in 2012 now looks like an incredible piece of business.

But what made Chelsea so sure that the attacking midfielder would turn into a world-class player?

Well, a video has emerged on YouTube showing footage of ‘The match that made Chelsea buy Eden Hazard.’

The match is question is Saint-Etienne vs Lille during the 2011/12 season.

Lille were trailing 1-0 when Hazard turned on his magic.

He equalised with a sensational individual goal, weaving in and out of Saint-Etienne’s defence.

Hazard then put Lille 2-1 ahead with a fierce left-footed strike from a tight angle.

Sensational.

From that game on, Lille went on a 17 match unbeaten run and finished third in Ligue 1.

Hazard bagged himself the Ligue 1 Player of the Year for a second consecutive season and Chelsea soon snapped him up.

Of course, it’s unlikely that Chelsea signed him on the back of just one performance and had probably been scouting him for months before making their move.

But if Chelsea scouts were in attendance during his performance against Saint-Etienne, they would have mind up their mind right there and then.
