Daniel Cormier is just three nights away from the first defence of his UFC Heavyweight championship inside the historic Madison Square Garden.

Whilst many expected him to defend the belt against Brock Lesnar first some-time in 2019, the promotion had to scramble for a main event with just four weeks to go, and Cormier deemed he would be fight-fit come November 3.

And DC will face Derrick Lewis at UFC 230, who produced a stunning late knockout of Alexander Volkov at 229 to extend his winning streak to three fights, before cutting a very memorable interview with Joe Rogan.

DC was last seen in the octagon that same night, as he helped diffuse the brawl following the Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor bout.

Nurmagomedov is a training partner of Cormier's, and they're seemingly close friends judging from Cormier's handling of the situation in Las Vegas earlier this month.

Cormier recently went on Ariel Helwani's MMA Show before his huge match with Lewis, and on the subject of Khabib, whilst he has many options, he knows who the big money fight is.

“Khabib has a number of options,” said Cormier, via MMA Fighting.

“Tony is great. I don’t dislike Tony Ferguson at all. I think he’s a phenomenal fighter, this dude’s a beast.

"I think he’s the tougher matchup for Khabib but I say do Khabib vs. Georges St-Pierre. That’s the fight. It’s big.

“Matchup wise, Tony, tough, GSP, super tough; but the history and the matchup of a GSP fight, at 165 ... It doesn’t have to be for a belt.

"This is a big enough fight that it doesn’t have to be for a title. Make it a catchweight fight. When you’ve got names like Khabib and Georges, it can be for anything. Let those guys fight."

Saint-Pierre hasn't fought since his defeat of Michael Bisping in November 2017 for the Middleweight title, before subsequently dropping the belt due to injury.

Dana White was unimpressed and when asked on a fight between GSP and Khabib he seemed less-than-keen to make it happen, but in UFC, the money always talks.

And when pressed on who he thinks would win the super-fight, Cormier was only going to give one answer in favour of his friend.

“Khabib wins but this is his closest fight ever because you don’t just control Georges St-Pierre,”  Cormier stated.

“But you’re asking me a loaded question because I’m never gonna say Khabib’s gonna lose.

“I think it’s a five-round decision. You don’t finish Georges St-Pierre, unless you are Matt Serra.”
