Daniel Cormier will go down as one of the best fighters ever to compete in the UFC when he retires.

The former 2008 Olympic wrestler debuted in the UFC back in 2013, when he defeated former heavyweight world champion Frank Mir.

Since then ‘DC’ has gone on to capture the UFC light-heavyweight title when he beat Anthony Johnson for the vacant strap.

Cormier would then add the heavyweight title when he defeated Stipe Miocic in his last fight at UFC 226.

After the knockout win against Miocic, Cormier became only the fourth man to win titles in two different weight classes- joining Randy Couture, BJ Penn, Conor McGregor and Georges St-Pierre on the list.

It seems Cormier has done everything inside the octagon- all but one thing, and that’s defeat former UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones.

The two rivals have met on two occasions, with Jones winning the first meeting at UFC 182 by points, but ‘Bones’ later saw his KO victory against Cormier in July 2017 altered to a No Contest after a failed pre-fight drug test.

With Cormier claiming he is retiring after March, when he will turn 40, the current two-weight champion stated he has just two fights left.

As Cormier prepares to defend his heavyweight title against Derrick Lewis on November 4, at UFC 230, with rumours of a potential super fight with Brock Lesnar targeted, DC may not have time to fit a third shot at beating Jones into his designated retirement date.

Cormier on possibility of not fighting Jones or Lesnar

However, the thought of not fighting Jones one more time won’t bother Cormier, as he told MMA Weekly he doesn't need Bones or Lesnar to enhance his legacy.

“I would look at it and talk to my training team about it but I don’t need to fight,” Cormier said. “I don’t even need to fight right now, I just want to fight.

“I don’t need to fight. I don’t need to fight for financial security, I don’t need to fight for legacy. I don’t need to fight. So I don’t need any of these guys. I don’t need Brock. I don’t need Jon.

“I don’t need these guys anymore. There was a time when I needed these guys just to get to the big money fights and making more money is nice but I’ve got plenty of money. I fight because I want to.

“So if anybody thinks I would chase these guys and extend my career for some sort of ‘I have to get this person or that person’, that’s not true. I don’t need anyone.”

With Cormier only allowing himself just over four months left, and Lesnar the reported next opponent, will DC extend his retirement to fit in another fight with his fierce rival Jones?
