Dejan Lovren's answer when asked to name the top five best defenders in the world

Dejan Lovren in Croatia training

Dejan Lovren caused a stir during the World Cup when he called himself one of the best defenders in the world.

"It's something special for me," Lovren said after Croatia beat England to reach the World Cup final, per Sky Sports. "From my point of view, people were saying I had a difficult season but I don't agree with that.

"I showed that I took Liverpool to the Champions League final and now with my national team we are in the final.

"I think people should recognise that I'm one of the best defenders in the world and not just talk nonsense I will say."

However, Lovren has struggled ever since making those comments.

The Croatian defender missed the start of the season through injury and has failed to establish himself back in the first team at Liverpool.

As a result, he has featured just twice for Juren Klopp's side this campaign.

But despite his problems, Lovren has maintained he's still one of the best defenders in the world.

Lovren stated in an interview with COPA90 that he believes he "didn't say anything wrong" when addressing those comments.

The 29-year-old was then asked to name the top five best defenders in the world and named himself, Virgil van Dijk, Raphael Varane, Sergio Ramos and Thiago Silva.

Dejan Lovren said himself and Virgil van Dijk are among the best defenders in the world

"Virgil [Van Dijk] I would say because we had our great season last season," he said. "We reached the final of the Champions League.

"I like Varane. He deserves a lot of credit but he doesn't get it as much as Ramos gets. I don't agree with that. He's definitely better than Ramos. He won the Champions League, he won the World Cup so he should be the best defender in the world.

"And I'll always consider Thiago Silva. He's really good and experienced. He's not so tall but he jumps very high. He's strong."

But Lovren then couldn't resist having a pop at Ramos, claiming that the Spaniard makes more mistakes than himself.

“Sometimes I don’t deserve the hate," he continued.

“If you look, Ramos has many more mistakes than me. But he’s at Real Madrid, he does a mistake, you win 5-1, 5-2, nobody sees the mistake.”

That's a big claim, although not everyone is going to agree with that.
