Sugar Ray Leonard is still widely regarded as one of the greatest fighters of all time.

His dazzling career spanned from 1977 to 1997, where the American won world titles in five weight divisions, the lineal championship in three weight classes, as well as the undisputed welterweight title.

A boxer with impeccable hand speed, electric combinations and part of “The Fabulous Four” - a group of boxers who all fought each other through the 1980s, consisting of himself, Roberto Duran, Thomas Hearns and Marvin Hagler.

It is near impossible to compare fighters from different eras, but the question that remains a hot topic is who would win if Leonard and Floyd Mayweather had ever gone toe-to-toe in their prime.

Leonard revealed all in an interview with Fox Sports’ regarding the hypothetical mega-fight with him and Mayweather.

“Absolutely (I would have beaten Floyd)," Leonard said, per Boxing News and Views. I’m not saying that because I’m bragging but then again my mind-set as a fighter, as a champion, will always tell me I could beat Mayweather. That’s what helped me become the fighter I became.”

“There is no one way to fight Floyd Mayweather. He is that good. He is that talented. You walk in there with a plan but to execute it takes time.

"In other words you’ve gone to feel him out and see what he goes for. Floyd, no one could penetrate his defence. He was one of the best guys out there. I would say body shots are his weakness.”

Mayweather is looking to come out of retirement once again to face UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov in a boxing match. ’Money’ earned millions from his fight with Conor McGregor last year and stretched his career record to 50-0.

Ultimately, we’ll never know what would have happened if Mayweather and Leonard had touched gloves but that won’t stop us making predictions, however.
