Nobody is a bigger fan of Dejan Lovren than Dejan Lovren.

The Liverpool defender raised eyebrows during the World Cup when he declared himself one of the best centre-backs on the planet.

Following Croatia’s win over England in the semi-final, Lovren said: “I took Liverpool to the final of the Champions League and now with my national team we are in the final.

"I think people should recognise that I am also one of the best defenders in the world and not just talk nonsense."

It would have been understandable had Lovren been speaking on April Fools’ Day. But he wasn’t.

Lovren has since doubled down on his comments, naming himself among the top five defenders in football.

The 29-year-old included Sergio Ramos among the five - Virgil van Dijk, Raphael Varane and Thiago Silva completed the list - but he couldn’t resist taking a shot at the Real Madrid captain.

Lovren's latest comments

"Sometimes I think I don't deserve the hate,” Lovren told Copa90.

"If you look, Ramos, he has many more mistakes than me. But he's at Real Madrid.

“When you do a mistake, but you win 5-1, 5-2, nobody sees the mistake.”

Lovren also said that Ramos’s teammate Varane is “definitely” better than the Spaniard.

It’s an incredibly bold set of quotes - and Ramos supporters aren’t happy.

One has reminded Lovren just how successful the Real Madrid defender has been for club and country by highlighting his list of honours.

Compared to Lovren’s achievements, there’s really only one winner.

The fact that Lovren has been a losing finalist in a Champions League, Europa League and World Cup final doesn’t help.

Ramos has managed to convert those final appearances into silverware.

And when all is said and done, he will go down as one of the finest defenders to ever play the game.

There’s nothing Lovren can do about that.
